Happy Days Recorded 1919 - 1929 CD018

This is an assemblage of classic pop songs that, for the most part have become standards, still performed today. I have two takes of Blue Skies by Marvin and Smalle. I have included Take 2 here. Listen to the closing of the song where Johnny sings "Nothing But Blue Days" with a puzzled echo of "Blue Skies" coming from Ed Smalle. The Popeye voice in "In My Gondola" is Poley McClintock. Billy Costello provided the voice of Popeye in the cartoons starting in 1933, but the best known voice was Jack Mercer, who took over in 1935. Fred Waring created a different type of vocal chorus, which he continued for much of his career - later calling them a "Glee Club" Of interest in Crumit's 1921 recording of "Frankie and Johnny" is the bridge, which was omitted in his Victor recording of 1927. Ruth Etting's back up has Tommy Dorsey-t/ Charlie Butterfield-tb/ Jimmy Dorsey-cl/Frank Signorelli-p/ Eddie Lang-g/ Joe Tarto or Ward Lay, sb. You never know where you'll find jazz greats in the 78 era. The novelty song "Hi Diddle Diddle" comes from a nursery rhyme dating back about four hundred years.Ted Lewis's version updated the lyrics with a prohibition theme - Had a little quart, it's all gone now-I know where it is and how-Hi diddle Diddle now my quart's in the middle of the cat and the fiddle and the cow. Coleman Hawkins contributes a solo towards the end of the Dixie Stomper's version. Fletcher Henderson-p-dir/ Russell Smith, Joe Smith, ? -t/ Charlie Green, tb / Buster Bailey-cl-as/ Don Redman-cl-as-gfs-a/ Coleman Hawkins-cl-ts/ Charlie Dixon-bj/ , bb / Kaiser Marshall-d / Joe Tarto-a. Kate Smith is best known for her second world war recordings, but she had her start in the mid twenties on Victor, backed up by pianist/ composer James Hanley. Unfortunately none of her early Victor sessions were issued, but she also recorded for Columbia, which found their way into the electrical catalog in 1926. This side features Ben Selvin with trumpet by Bob Effros. Belle Baker is accompanied by the Virginians - a small combo out of the Whiteman band. Ross Gorman-cl-bcl-as-dir/ Henry Busse-Frank Siegrist-t/ Sam Lewis-tb/ Hale Byers-as-f/ Don Clark-cl-ss-as/ Ferdie Grofe-p-a/ Sleepy Hall or Mike Pingitore-bj/ George Tjordy-vn/ Jack Barsby-bb. Peggy English records featured Rube Bloom on piano. Rube Bloom was a composer and musician who played with musicians, including Frankie Trumbauer, Bix Beiderbecke, the Dorsey brothers and many more. As a composer, he partnered with Harry Ruby, Marvin Smolev, Ted Koeler, Johnny Mercer and others, writing around four hundred songs such as Truckin, The Voice Of The Southland, Day In, Day Out, Fools Rush In. His "Song Of The Bayou" won a Victor song writing contest in 1929. ~Mickey Clark
