The Reed Section Best known in the reeds would be Freddy Gardner - born in 1910, at 15 he taught himself the saxophone to alleviate asthma symptoms. At 18, he formed the New Colorado Band, winning a competition at the Chelsea Town Hall. He played with Bert Firman, Syd Lypton,and Canadian born Billy Bissett. He played with the Duke Upon Duke Ellington's first visit to England to favourable acclaim. In 1936 - 1937 he led a small jazz group which recorded extensively. He played in George Scott-Wodd's Orchestra and Benny Carter's Orchestra when Carter was visiting England. He can be heard in Peter Yorke's R.A.F. Concert Orchestra - I have included some broadcast material from this collaboration in 'Military Bands CD119' Danny Polo was up there too, playing with Paul Ash and Jean Goldkette,Jack Teagarden,Lud Gluskin(in Berlin-1928),Colman Hawkins,The New Yorkers Tanzorkester-1927( in Berlin),Joe Sullivan,Claude Thornhill,The Varsity Seven(Varsity label-1939) in the U.S. Ambrose,the Arcadians,Louis De Vries,Maurice Elwin,The Embassy Rhythm Eight,The Hot Club Swing Stars(Paris-1938),Ray Ventura Et Ses Collegiens (January-May 1929-Paris), Spike Hughes,Philip Lewis,the Rhythmic Eight, The Rhyhm Rascals (English Crown label recordings -1935) and Miles Davis in the late forties. He recorded a number of tracks while in London with his own group.
