Maurice Gunsky #3 Recorded 1927 - 1940? 205C

In 1930, all Gunsky's records were still in the Victor catalog , but 1938 saw only his debut recording "Lay My Head Beneath a Rose" backed with "Why Do I Always Remember" remaining available. This recording was issued as well in the U.K. on the Zonophone label and had sold more 230,000 copies by 1932. Through to the mid thirties, his radio shows were much listened to. The Lubbock Morning Avalanche on March 1, 1930 announced: "Maurice Gunsky, radio tenor, has returned to KPO after a tour of eastern stations". This wasn't actually true as he travelled digitally-in today's terms- transcriptions, re-broadcasts etc. meant that other stations could pick up the signal and re-broadast it to a far wider audience. A dillema has occurred to me - which goes back to the first disc in this set with the Heart Throbs shows - which I am told are from 1934, but all the content was contemporary with 1930 and back, so I gave the date as 1930. Aside from the last two cuts on this volume, dating from about 1940 or so, all his recorded output is 1929 and previous. I wonder what his repertoire was, later in his career. Another artist comes to mind who was physically a similar type - Art Gillham. Art actually vocalized these atributes on his records - dumpy, short, balding etc. as part of his act, whereas Maurice Gunsky didn't convey that vision, and many women that listened to him weren't aware of his physical being. That punch line didn't come along until 1979 when Herb Caen wrote in his column "Maurice Gunsky, idol of thousands of women who had never laid eyes on him, made the mistake of emerging from the radio studio for a personal appearance in a Market St. Theater. The crowds were enormous -- but not for long. For Maurice Gunsky, of the romantic pipes, turned out to be rather short, dumpy and balding. His career went into fatal decline." That is to say, his live performing career. He also became the musical director for MacGregor and Sollie, a transcription service-most likely the source of the Heart Throb Shows. He continued songwriting in Hollywood and had a show in 1933 the "Maurice Gunsky Review" which again was live and transcribed. In 1938 he was again featured on KSFO radio. Much of this information thanks the the San Francisco Public Library ~ Mickey Clark
