Drummer and manager Bill Harty was the one member of the NMDO to make the move to the U.S. in 1934. At this point, the personnel changes to an american lineup as Ray formed a new outfit in the United States, . Union bans at the time would not allow him to take his other British musicians with him. Born in Ireland in 1899,after WW1, Harty moved to Birmingham,England taking up the drums and working for the Dunlop Tyre Company. He played with various local bands on the early Birmingham jazz scene before touring around Europe for much of the twenties. Upon his return to England, he played with bands led by Roy Fox, Nat Gonnella,Edgar Jackson,Philip Lewis Harry Shalson, Al Starita, Jean Pougnet, Bill Gerhardi, Percival Mackey,Spike Hughes, Arthur Lally,Lew Stone.he Recorded with Blue Pacific Jazz Band - along with Ted Heath,(Piccadilly label),The Millionaires, and the Durium Dance Orchestra, the Piccadilly Players. Backed up Jack Buchanan, Nan Blackstone. His own orchestra recorded with Ella Logan in two sessions for Brunswick in Los Angeles - one in 1937 and another in 1939. In 1938 he recorded a couple of sides for Vocalion in Los Angeles.Charlie Spivak played with Larry Clinton,the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra,Bob Crosby,the U.S. Georgians,the New Englanders backing up Annette Hanshaw,the Metronome All Star band,Glenn miller's Orchestra, Mills Swingphonic Orchestra, Chauncey Morehouse, Ozzie Nelson,the New Orleans Ramblers (directed by Ben Pollack)and other Pollack bands,Clark Randall, Casper Reardon, Gil Rodin, along with Sylvester Ahola in Paul Specht's band, Jack Teagarden,Claude Thornhill,Johnny Williams and his Swing Sextette. Pee Wee Erwin-t/Glenn Miller-tb-a/Johnny Minz-Jim Cannon-Milt Yaner-cl-as/Bud Freeman-ts/Nick Pisani-Friitz-Prospero-Dan D'Anrea-vn/Claude Thornhill-p-a/George Van Eps-g/Delmar Kaplan-sb/Bill Harty-d/Al Bowlly-The Freshmen(I believe a pseudonym for the Modernaires)-Sally Singer-v The Modernaires - Hal Dickinson, Chuck Goldstein, Bill Conway, and Ralph Brewster were active in New York at the time, and - I believe - recorded with Ray Noble under the pseudonym of the 'Freshmen'. The Modernaires recorded with Noble in the late thirties, before they started with Glenn Miller.
