This Diamond Disc Classics series is dedicated to my Mother - Betty Clark 1929 - 2016 - an insiration to many in the arts community in Penticton B.C., since she started the Folk-Art Show in the early 70's. I joined the Madrigal Singers with her at the age of 16 and have sung ever since. She went on to chair the B.C.Festival of the Arts and the Okanagan Symphony Society amongst many other volunteer activities. As she was getting frail, I took the challenge to tackle this project. Edison Diamond Disc records are one of the most difficult to get full tone without the characteristic rumble associated with these historic recordings. The material used to press Diamond Discs was phenolic - a resiliant material with a very high melting temperature. The major drawback was the use of sawdust as a filler inside the record. As the edges were not sealed, exposure to air and moisture caused the material to swell. With hill and dale recordings, this introduces rumble - more at the outside of the record, lessening toward the middle. I have developed a process of transfer to organically reduce the rumble by playing slow. Each side takes 11 minutes to transfer this way - 22 minuted per disc. I modified a very special tone arm - a Pickering 190D with a very light assembly with vertical travel which I temporarily modified to add mass, while adjusting tracking force to optimum. This mod allows lower frequencies to be recorded while the cartridge and stylus move in unison, reducing the rumble. I have equalized for the most natural tone. The rumble can be heard at times at the beginning of the record, but when about 1/4 has been played, the rumble is almost gone and the warmth of the music shines through. Please see behind the disc for the artists. Edison 82266 has the Sextet from Lucia twice - with slightly different singers, recorded almost a year apart. Born in 1882, Guido Ciccolini known to be an equivalent to Caruso, recorded the 1917 Lucia Sextet and in 1919.He made his debut in Bologna as Alfredo in 'La Traviata’ in 1907. ~ Mickey Clark
