This album starts with Isidore Soucy. Born in Ste-Blandine, Québec, in 1899, he learned much of his music and playing from his father, Elzeor Soucy and was frequently accompanied by his brother, Fernando. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, their later recordings were quite wild and inspired as they pushed each other to play to the limits of their ability. I'd suggest them for additional listening. By the fifties the Famille Soucy was more pop in content. J.O.LaMadeleine, born in 1905 was a lumberjack who learned fiddle from his father, Albert. He was more interested in the Reels , while his father was more pop oriented. He was recording by the age of 20, and his son Marcel accompanied him on guitar. Louis Blanchette was born in Rivière-du-Loup in 1905 and was a longshoreman at the Port of Montreal. This harmonica recording comes from ca. 1935 Roger Aubry remains a mystery - I have been able to find no background on him. (Joseph) Omer Dumas-vn was born in St-Antoine-Abbé, Quebec, in 1889. Taking up the violin when very young, and by 1907 was studying in Montreal. By 1912, he began playing in a small group for silent films, and started to compose such pieces as Fleurette Valse,Danse Campagnarde and Le Quadrille de Caraquet and a Romance for violin or cello and piano. Personnel of his group 'Les Ménestrels' included Dumas and Eugène Bastien-vn(v, Jean-bb Dansereau or Stanley Widman (bass), Americo Funaro-g , Armand Gagnier-cl, Saturno Gentiletti-acc, and Ernest Décarie or Léo Le Sieur-p. Réal Béland and Mariette Vaillant (Dumas's wife) sang with the group, and violinists Albert Bastarache and Isidore Soucy, and the harmonica players Oscar and Edgar Morin, were frequent guests. Willie Lamothe was born in Saint-Hugues de Bagot in 1920. After serving during WWII, he toured and had radio and television shows throughout the fifties. ~Mickey Clark
