Out On A Limb Disc #2 160BN

Continuing with the theme of sophisticated love songs, this volume transitions 10 years between some track. "A Cabin In The Pines" is followed by "Frenesi". Of note - when Ray Noble left England late in 1934, he had to leave behind his entire band, aside from his drummer Bill Harty who as his manager was exempted. His American arranger was Glenn Miller. After hearing Artie Shaw's rendition of "Frenesi", Miller's seemed slow at first, but the sonic quality of his arrangement really comes out in the hi-def transfer - there is a transition just before the trumpet solo that is quite remarkable. Arthur Todd - not to be confused with Dick Todd sings "Thanks For The Memory", accompanying himself on guitar. Both Arthur and Dick were born in 1914 Arthur William Todd in Baltimore, Maryland on 11 March 1914 - guitarist-vocalist ; Arthur Richard "Dick" Todd August 4, 1914-trumpet-vocalist was born in Alberta Canada. They both recorded for the Blubird label in Los Angeles in 1938. As you will hear, Arthur sings a very high tenor. I wondered at Dick todd's "wooden" tone - like a tenor singing under his range. Josef Schmidt the German tenor had that quality as well as Tito Schipa when they sing in their lower ranges. Arthur Todd and his wife Dotty recorded the hit version of "Chanson D'amour" in the fifties. I believe this to be the same Arthur Todd as on this disc. I have included other sides by him on my "Long Live Love" series. Arthur' guitar work flows to the next track - "A Garden In The Rain" with Willard Robison and his Deep River Orchestra. According to the http://jazz.tulane.edu/ website, the musicians in this track are ?Harry Goldfield-t/ Chester Hazlett-cl-bcl/ Matty Malneck-Kurt Dieterle-Mischa Russell or John Bowman-v/ Charles Gaylord-vla/ Snoozer Quinn-g/ Willard Robison-p/ Mike Trafficante-bb
