Ray Noble #7 All recorded 1934 CD352g

Our Price: $16.99

This is the final disc in this set devoted entirely to Ray Noble's British recordings. The Rhythm Section Ray Noble played very rarely with the NMDO, hiring Raie Da Costa - who seemed to appear on only recordings 1929 - 1930. I understand that she was a friend of fellow South African pianist Harry Jacobson. She was born in Cape Town in 1905 and made her way to England by 1924, attempting a concert pianist's career, but she had more success with her flamboyant improvisation, recording for Parlophone and HMV until her untimely death in 1934 from appendicitis - a condition that nowadays is rarely fatal. Fortunately, many of her recordings with Ray Noble give her lots of room to strut her stuff. Jack Evetts, along with Bert Thomas and Bill Harty played also with the Savoy Orpheans. Jack seems to be better known during the mid to late thirties. Ray Noble never used the tuba in his arrangements, and at times used the bass drum prominently as in 'Living In Clover'. Tiny Winters played with Ambrose,George Chisholm and his Jive Five, Eddie Carroll and his Swing Music, Joe Danield and his 'Hot shots' in Drumnastics,Teddy Foster and his Kings Of Swing,Roy Fox,Harmonica player Max Geldray,Nat Gonella,Coleman Hawkins,Edgar Jackson,Lew Stone, and seems to have had one recording session under his own name as 'Tiny Winters and his Bogey Seven',all during the early to late thirties. Spike Hughes did a substantial number of recordings with his own band, and hired many of the NMDO musicians for his own recordings. Some of these fellows were so busy - spreading themselves too thin - that they would doze off when they ween't actively playing during gigs and recording. Scottish born in 1904, Arthur Young stands out for reaching out to Stephane Grappelly for recording, and for his back up of Vera Lynnwhere he played novochord -an early electronic keyboard. He was a member of The Four Bright Sparks with Len Fillis, Van Phillips, and Rudy Starita and recorded for Columbia. Bill Harty-d-vib was the one musician who made the change when Ray chose to move to the USA and a business partner for Ray Noble. Spike Hughes- was a prolific string bass player - you can hear his playing behinf Fred Astaire's 1930 recording of 'Crazy Feet', and recorded extensively under his own name.
