Helen Rowland has a very natural way of singing with a warm laid-back jazz style and most of her records are in a relaxed dance style. She had a brief career on radio and records with Ben Selvin, Vic Erwin, Phil Spitalny, Freddie Rich, Erno Rapee, Frankie Trumbauer and possibly others. The Isham Jones Medley starts with On the Alamo - Swinging Down the Lane and I'll see You In My Dreams with vocal by Jack Fulton. This is an early 78rpm long-play record with very fine grooves easily damaged by the heavy pick-ups of the day but has a playing time of five minutes . Sylvia Froos was born in Manhattan on April 19, 1914, and grew up in the Bronx. When she was 7, her mother signed her up in a juvenile vaudeville troupe called Kid's Cabaret. As Baby Sylvia Froos she made her first radio appearance in 1925. In April 1927 she appeared in an early talkie movie She was one of several top vaudevillians who made short talkies intended to accompany feature movies and, ultimately, to replace live vaudevillians in the movie palaces. In England in the mid-1930's she appeared on television, years before it was available in the United States. In the 1940's she appeared in a few soundies. I present here two sides with the Sid Bass Orchestra about 1950 - she still sings very well in this post-war offering. June Purcell (born 1903 in Indianapolis, Indiana) is in December of 1924, where she could be heard singing on the very new medium of radio, first for WKNX and WFWB, out of Hollywood, California, either as a soloist with piano accompaniment, or on the "Little Symphony" show, where she was a featured performer in 1925. By 1927, she was apparently popular enough to enter into vaudeville, where she toured the West Coast and the Midwest --- prominently billed as "June Purcell of K.N.X. - The Voice of Hollywood." Radio work and sporadic vaudeville tours continued throughout 1927 and 1928, with a Vitaphone short titled "Songs and Styles," in which she was credited as "June Purcell, Hollywood's Radio Girl." June Purcell is heard here with Roy Fox in 1928 - before his move to England for his best known Big Band recordings - and her final cut is with Jack Denny and his Orchestra June Clyde (December 2, 1909-1987) was an American actress, singer and dancer. Clyde's career began at age seven on the vaudeville stage, billed as Baby Tetrazini. She progressed to a modest career in Hollywood films before marrying English film director Thornton Freeland. She is heard here with Arthur Young-p/ Jean Pougnet or Stephane Grappelly-vn/ Albert Harris-g/ Max Bacon-d Two quirky songs from 1935 recorded in England for the Regal-Zonophone label.
