You'll find some of the most beautiful recordings by the Victor Salon Orchestra on this volume. I have also included some sides by the Victor Concert Orchestra, which is basically an augmented Victor Salon Orchestra. Born in 1889, Nathaniel Shilkret was thirty-five when he formed the Victor Salon Orchestra in 1924. He had joined the Victor Talking Machine company in 1915, so he had nine years of experience. He was multi-talented with roles as conductor, director, piano, arranger, composer, organ, clarinet, celeste, session supervisor, songwriter, chimes, bells, lyricist, speaker, traps, pipe organ, and whistling. As such, he was present in these roles on five thousand four hundred and ninety-four sides recorded for Victor up till 1949 - his last session for Victor. After the mid thirties, he became more active in film and radio. Shilkret wrote "Concerto For Trombone" which was introduced by Tommy Dorsey in 1945. Track 14 is what I believe to be the first slow version of Hoagy Carmichael's song "Stardust." Every other version I have heard from the era has been in a faster foxtrot tempo - racing through a song that has been recorded more times than any other. Dana Suesse wrote "Syncopated Love Song," also Known as "Have You Forgotten?" with lyrics contributed by Leo Robin, and "Jazz Nocturne," also known as "My Silent Love" with lyrics by Edward Heyman.
