The Brass Section Sylvester Ahola a.k.a.Hooley was an American born trumpeter from Gloucester, Massachusetts. Born in 1902, he first played with The Frank Ward Orchestra. They recorded tests for a small label - Lincoln - not associated with the later discs issued by Cameo. All three sides were unissued. He then joined Charlie Spivak in Paul Specht's Orchestra which went on a tour of England, returning to the U.S. to play with the California Ramblers, Joe Candullo,Consolidated Club Orchestra, the Georgians,Okeh Melodians,Fred Rich,Peter Van Steeden,Dale Wimbrow(The Del-Mar-Va Songster)and his Rubevill Tuners, and Adrian Rollini's band.He recorded two sides for Edison as Hooley Ahola's Vikings. Upon his return to England in 1927, he played with the Savoy Orpheans,Savoy Plaza Band,Deauville Dance Orchestra, Bert Firman,Harry Hudson,Spike Hughes and his Decca-Dents, Bert Ambrose, Philip Lewis,The Piccadilly Players,The Rhythmic Eight,Ray Starita and His Ambassadors Band, Lew stone,Tunney's Floridorians, and the New Mayfair Dance Orchestra. He was so successful that the British Musicians Union stipulated in March of 1930 that he confined his talents to Ambrose's band. This didn't sit well with him, forcing his return to the U.S. Australian Frank Coughlan played both trumpet and trombone and is said to be the 'Father of Australian Jazz' leading a 13 piece band which opened the Trocadero Night Club in Sydney in 1936. He had played with Fred Elizade's band in England. Nat Gonella and Jack Jackson had their own bands -Max Goldberg-Alfie Noakes-Norman Payne-Bill Shakespeare-t/Lew Davis-Jock Fleming-Tony Thorpe-tb can all be found in multiple bands - far too many to list here. Val Rosing can be credited with waxing the first issue of 'Try A Little Tenderness' but may be best known as the vocalist on BBC Dance Orchestra's recording of the 'Teddybear's Picnic'. He sang with Ray Noble, Henry Hall, Jack Payne, Spike Hughes and his Decca-Dents, and Jay Wilbur. He had his own bands the Radio Rhythm Rascals and the Swing Stars. He also recorded solos on the Rex label. After Louis B. Mayer discovered him and took him back to the US for a film career, he became known as Gilbert Russell. Val's career at MGM did not live up to expectations,he continued with his new name on Broadway in starring in Broadway shows such as the Song of Norway and the Student Prince and, following his father, Vladimir Rosing, performed in Opera.
