First on Volume 2 is an Irish song - unusual for Franklyn Baur as he didn't normally do ethnic character songs. Here he sings with 7 different groups - and I had enough songs by him to fill two discs for 1927 recordings alone. Roger Wolfe Kahn had the finances to hire the very best of New York session men. It's not surprising that Franklyn was active with a radio career as well. Baur's notable broadcasts were for the prestigious Voice of Firestone, starting as a soloist on Firestone's premiere broadcast in December 1928 and remaining until May 1930. His contract was not renewed because he had asked for additional compensation to his substantial weekly broadcast fee, to perform at a company function. Charles Dornberger's band was one of the best from the twenties. Featuring Max Connett-George Hall-t/ Thurlow Granz-tb/ Charles Dornberger-cl-as-ldr/ C.C.Borland-cl-as-arr/ George Gammon-ts/ Russ Carlson-p/ Perry Dring-bj/ Bob Hill-bb/ Carl Skinner-d George Hall was a differnt musician to the one who recorded in the thirties for Bluebird Records with vocals by Dolly Dawn. He also played with Paul Van Loan in 1925 The Paul Ash recording of "Just Once Again" sounds more like Whiteman than his own recording of the song. Paul was renowned for his arrangements - Paul Ash primarily played movie theatres throughout the U.S. during the 1920s and 1930s, working in the Chicago's McVickers Theatre and Oriental Theatre, the Paramount Theatre in Brooklyn and Manhattan and the Granada Theatre in San Francisco and was billed as "The Rajah of Jazz". Many up-and-coming jazz musicians and entertainers played in his outfit including Benny Goodman,Helen Kane,Glenn Miller, Red Norvo, Danny Polo, and Martha Raye. Denza Dance Band and the Raymond Dance Band were pseudonyms that he - along with some other bands used.
