Ben Selvin Orchestra #7 Recorded 1922 - 1931 CD306c

This album is dedicated to Bob Effros. Robert "Bob" Effros was born December 6th, 1900 in London, England of Russian and Jewish stock but moved to Memphis Tennessee in 1904. By 1911, he had run away from home and found employment as a purser on a Mississippi river boat - exposing him to a vibrant and stimulating environment full of entertainment and musicians such as King Oliver. He was then Inspired to pick up the cornet, later switching to trumpet. At age 17 to 19, Bob bugled in the U.S. Army, then at the end of the war, vocalist Bee Palmer hired hime to play in her band Bee Palmer and Her New Orleans Rhythm Kings. Ben Selvin and Bob lived a few blocks apart for most of their young years in Forrest Hills, NY and the friendship and musical collaborations lasted all their lives, including both their moves to Los Angeles. Also a composer, Bob wrote more than a dozen hits such as: "Why The Twenties Roared", "Tin Ear" "Cornfed" and "Why Don't You Get Lost?" The Vincent Lopez Orchestra toured Europe extensively, the most infamous trip being in in 1925, on the ocean liner S.S. Leviathan. It seems that Lopez owed some money and he had the musicans instruments packed disguised as “Gear Machinery”, “China -Handle With Care” and “Typewriters -This Side Up”! Lopez snuck onto the liner at 5:00 am on the morning of departure, keeping a low profile in clarinetist Billy Hamilton's stateroom until safely outside the three mile limit in international waters. Lopez's orchestra toured for two months at the Kit Kat Club, Piccadilly Palace and other hot British Clubs. Bob also played with the bands of Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson, Sam Lanin, Red Nichols, and Harry Reser, and accompanied many vocalists including Annette Hanshaw, Bessie Smith, The Boswell Sisters, Mae Questal, Fanny Brice and Ethel Waters. His work playing carooon scores with the Max Fleischer Orchestra amounted to countless cartoons like: “Betty Boop”, Pop-Eye, and "Felix the Cat". Thanks to Bob's granddaughter Barbara Effros for insight into the history of this prolific musician.
