Violin Varieties Recorded 1909 - 1935 CD076B

To my mind, the violin is one of the most difficult instruments to play - no frets to assure tuning as in a guitar, shorter strings, so that tuning has to be very accurate to be in tune, dexterity and consistency executing the vibrato. Then we have the rarity of some of the instruments - and their value. This compilation includes a rare 1924 solo recording by Eugene Ormandy, best known as the Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Born in 1899, in Budapest, Austro-Hungary, he took up the violin at the age of three and was welcomed into the Royal Hungarian Academy Of Music at the age of five - an unbelievable statistic as most kids his age are still playing with dolls. Eugene was conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra briefly in 1931, moving to Minneapolis until 1938, then back with Philadelphia until 1980, sharing the position with Leopold Stokowski. Yehudi Menuhin had his debut with the San Francisco Symphony at the age of five, being an old pro having already played for two years. Jascha Heifetz was considered to be one of the greatest violinists of the twentieth century. Born in Lithuania in 1901, he was performing by ten years of age, an by the age of eighteen, he was the highest paid violinist in the world. Eugène-Auguste Ysaÿe was born in 1858, and was being tutored by his father by five years of age. The presence of only one track by this much lauded musician, conductor and composer should not lessen the importance of the "Tzar of the Violin." Cesar Franck wrote the Violin Sonata in A as a wedding present for Ysaÿe and his wife in 1886. Ysaÿe played it often for the rest of his life. Chausson's Poème was his response to Ysaÿe's request for a concerto. Joseph Szigeti thought those two dedications demonstrated the enormous respect in which Ysaÿe was held. At this point, information about Herman and Rudolph Fonck remain a mystery. It has been suggested that the names were pseudonyms for well known musicians of the day, but nothing has come up yet. Joe Venuti was one of most renowned jazz violinists, frequently in the company of guitarist Eddie Lang during the late twenties. Alfred Dubois was born in 1898 in Belgium, and was a student at the Royal conservatory in Brussels by the age of twelve, and it is said that he was a student of Eugene Ysaye. Eddie South was born in Missouri, and studied classical music in Budapest, Paris and Chicago, but being African-American, there was resistance to his performing classical music.~ Mickey Clark
