Mike Markel was first recorded on victor-but only four titles of which only two were issued and he had an enduring contract with the Okeh record company that extended almost the length of his career, aside from a few Brunswick, Columbia, Gennett and Edison records. Some of the Okeh sides were issued on Canadiuan Apex. It was only after November of 1927 that he recorded for the Banner family of labels, although many of the Okehs were also issued on Canadian Apex Markel's Orchestra personnel: Mike Markel-p-dir/Hymie Farberman-Marty Berger-t/ Fred Shilling-Ray Stilwell-tb/ Phil Cole- cl-ss-as//Loren McMurray-as/bsx/Eddie Davis-vn/ Frank Gravito-bj/ bb/d/ Al Bernard-Vaughn De Leath-Arthur Hall-Billy Jones-Irving Kaufman-Harold "Scrappy" Lambert-Les Reis(as Russell Douglas)-Johnny Marvin-Leroy Montesanto-Frank Munn-Ray Stilwell+tb-v I won't bore you with too many technical details, but when Okeh joined forces with Columbia, the recording speed changed from 78 rpm to 75 rpm. The reason for that was to do with the protocol for the customer setting the speed of their Graphophone(the Columbia trademark name) The process involved setting the speed to 80 rpm with the heavy tone arm remaining off of the record. The adjustment was to have 20 revolutions of the record to coincide with a second hand of a watch encompassing fifteen seconds - i.e. eighty rpm. However, once the tone arm was placed on the record, it would slow it down to seventy-five rpm. I have confirmed this with a classical piano piece played by Myra Hess which was in the correct key when played at 75 rpm. Victor records previous to June of 1928 are fairly consistantly recorded at 76.6 rpm. Aside from having vocals sounding wrong, the tempi would sound rushed when played at 78 rpm. Around 1923, tempos were slightly slower than 1925, and had more of a feeling of syncopation. A case in point was the 1923 recording of Charleston by Louis Katzman for Vocalion, which gave more space for the rhyhmic feeling of the song, while Whiteman's version was sped up to the point that there wasn't time to give the same rhythmic feeling of the earlier rendition.~ Mickey Clark
