George Olsen and His Music #4 MC351D
Four different label affiliations are included in this album. Olsen's final Victor was waxed in January of 1933 - a 6 month hiatus followed, after which his Columbia period started. By 1932 - 1933, Victor issued some records using the Bell recording system - the closest thing to hi-fi to date. Unfortunately, the heavy tone-arms of the day would wear these records quickly due to the high dynamics achieved with this system. After Orville Knapp died in a plane crash, George took over the direstion of his band until Knapp's widow vetoed that decision and replaced him with another director. Joe Morrison, Eddie Howard, Judith Blair, Ray Adams and Henry Russell joined the ranks of vocalists. Russell played novochord and would later join Horace Heidt's organization, recording as 'Henry Russell and his Mystic Music/Romancers' for the ARC family of labels after 1939, with musicians from Heidt's band.
Olsen recorded six sides with Decca in 1939, and two sides with Varsity - 'Dreamer's Holiday' and 'The Good Time Polka'. The final two tracks included on this disc were recorded for the Majestic label in the mid forties.
