Paul Specht was born in Sinking Spring Pennsylvania in 1895. He Learned to play the violin from his father - Charles G. Specht , a violinist, organist and bandleader in his own right. He attended Combs Conservatory in Philadelphia, leading his first band by 1916, and toured the Western U.S.A. during World War one.After signing with Columbia Records in 1922, he played both with a larger ensemble and with a smaller, more jazz oriented group called the Georgians. He toured England several times, beginning in 1922, setting up a school for jazz musicians there in 1924. Specht encoutered some difficulty with his English gigs due to political and union issues. He did not return to England after 1926, having become thoroughly dissatisfied with the treatment he had received. Specht's was the first band to broadcast for the RCA company, and was the first band to film after the the end of the silent era. In 1929, his orchestra was asked to play at the inaugeration of Herbert Hoover, being chosen over Paul Whiteman. He continued to be popular into the 1930's, and led bands into the 1940's, developing arthritis which mad playing difficult. He lived in Greenwich Village later in life and arranged for radio and television. Noted jazz and popular musicians played in his bands, including Hank D'Amico,Russ Morgan, Sylvester Ahola, Arthur Schutt, Charlie Spivak, Joe Tarto, Art Christmas, Chauncey morehouse, Al Philburn, Frank Guearante, Ernie Warren, Harold Saliers, Johnny O'Donnell, dick hohnson, Roy Smeck and many more.
