This set of Ray Noble and the New Mayfair Dance Orchestra was inspired by my friend Max Jacquiard by adding substanially to my Ray Noble collection - about a year ago he called - he wanted to send me about 800 78s - more than doubling my Rany Noble records alone - not to mention Roy Fox, Lew Stone Jay Wilbur-Savoy Orpheans-Billy Cotton-Nat Gonnella - the list goes on. I found our combined lists to number 224 sides by Ray Noble - Raymond Stanley "Ray" Noble was born in 1903 - although some sources atate 1907 - Graduated from the Royal academy of Music at age 16. By July 1926 he won an arranging competition for the first time and in September 1926 he won Melody Maker arranging contest for second time with his score of "Coming Thro' The Cornfield" He was hired as a staff arranger with the Lawrence Wright Music Company then Pianist-arranger for Debroy Somers until July 1928 when he started arranging for the BBC Dance Orchestra - headed by Jack Payne. He assumed the helm on the New Mayfair Dance Orchestra from Carroll Gibbons in August 1929. Raie Da Costa is present on I believe - four sides - Fairy On The Clock, Finesse, and the Whoopee and Monte Carlo medleys. Raie was from South Africa as well as Harry Jacobson who also played piano with the NMDO. Here's the general personnel for the N.M.D.O.
