Leo Reisman #5 Recorded 1931- 1933 CD082E

Around the time covered in this disc, Reisman's orchestra boasted eight violins and an extra piano in November of 1931. Fran Frey-as-v of George Olsen's band joined for some sessions around March of 1932. In October of 1933, actor Clifton Webb recorded 'Easter Parade' and 'How's Chances?' Leo Reisman, vn, dir: Lew Sherwood-t/ Chuck Campbell-Ernie Gibbs-tb/ Jess Smith-cl-as-f/ Fran Frey-Burt Williams-as/ ts /Adrian Rollini, bsx, d,/ H.Piller-bsn / J.Furth-f/ P.Ottiano-o/ Lew Conrad-Sammy Schklar-vn and 2 others-vn/ Jack Shilkret-vc/ Raymond Pugh-p/g/sb/ Harry Sigman-d/ Lew Sherwood would join Eddie Duchin when he formed his own band, and does most of the vocals with duchin during the thirties. As of March, 1934 Eddie Patrowicz--t/ Joe Poretta-as/Carl Prager-as-vn/ Don Trimmer-ts/Lew Conrad-vn-v/ Sam Liner-p/ Ned Cola-g/ Al Kunze-bb-sb/ Herman Fink-d/ Charles Carlile recorded only a total of four sides with Leo Reisman. Indeed, it seems that he never made any other recordings. He was also an actor and appeared in a number of Hollywood movies including Oriental Phantasy (1933), The Old Camp Ground (1935) and What's the Idea? (1935). He sang in all these movies. Milton Douglas as well was an actor with a career on Broadway: Good Boy (1929) Melody (1933) Summer Wives (1936) Winged Victory (1943) Follow the Girls (1944) Howard Phillips too was a Broadway actor who had played in Electra (1927), Rosalie (1928) The Patriarch (1929) The Last Mile (1930) with a movie version (1932) and Hilda Cassidy (1933). He also starred in a number of movies The Spider (1931), Careless Lady (1932) and Fugitive in the Sky(1936). After learning about these actors, it makes sense that Fred Astaire and his sister Adele would also perform with Leo Reisman. Born Frederick Austerlitz in 1899 in Omaha, Nebraska, and encouraged by his mother Johanna and his older sister Adele, who wanted a ticket out of Omaha. His father was an immigrant from Austria, so when he sings 'I Love Louisa' in German he does it very naturally. His father, a brewer at the Storz Brewing Company, lost his job in 1905 and his mother got her wish - they moved to New York where she encouraged Fred and Adele to partner up as a vaudeville act. They took the name of their uncle 'L'Astaire' and the rest is history, although Fred had resisted taking any dance lessons. Sometimes true talent doesn't require an education. Intuition can play a big part in an artist's development. ~ Mickey Clark
