The String Section Harry Berly had been with Jack Hylton - I have found his name with violin, viola, sax, oboe, ocarina and clarinet. He was a student of renowned violist Lionel Tertis. I heard many years ago that the air pressure a musician had to attain to play the oboe could cause mental issues - and this seems to be the case. Berly had become obsessed with playing classical viola and had become despondent, feeling he couldn't grasp his dream, resulting in insomnia. It seems that he jumped in front of a train in the London tubes - committing suicide. He was playing with Lew Stone at the time. He recorded with the Durium Dance Band-with Al Bowlly vocals ,Roy Fox, Nat Gonnella,Arthur Lally, Philip Lewis, The Million-aires (boasting a number of musicians from the NMDO) and with Arthur Young's band. Jean Pougnet-vn-v was born in 1907 in the Republic of Mauritius - an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast coast of the African continent. He had a string quartette which augmented Hylton's ensemble in 1926 at the Kit Kat Club. In October 1928 Jean Pougnet and his Orchestra (a Jack Hylton unit) performed at the Green Park Hotel Piccadilly. Just after the mid thirties, he appears playing and singing with Ambrose. Alan Ferguson played guitar backing up American vocalist Lou Abelardo along with Sylvester Ahola, Danny Polo or Arthur Lally. Rust states that Abelardo recorded "copiously" in both the USA and Britain - but his records don't show up at all - and he is not included in the Ruse Personality book - just a few entries in Rust's jazz discography. Ferguson recorded with Una Mae Carlisle and her Jam Bandin the late thirties. About the same time, he recroded with George Chisholm and His Jive Five. He can be found on records that duettists Cavan O'Connor and Maurice Elwin waxed, under various pseudonyms incuding 'Bert and Bob', 'Creighton and Laughton", and backed up Jimmy Dorsey in a session where he was playing with 'Spike Hughes and his Three Blind Mice' in 1930. In 1938 he played with Leonard Feather in a London session for Decca. Ferguson had been present in number of larger sessions with Spike Hughes from 1930 - 1932. Philip Lewis had included him in sessions along with many other players from the NMDO. 1935 saw him in sessions with Billy Mason and Vaiaida Snow. He was a member of 'Fats Waller and his Continental Rhythm' in 1938. Trumpeter Duncan Whyte had his back up for at least one record in 1935. see also -Bert Thomas-g/Al Bowlly-Pat O'Malley-g-v
