Smith Ballew #2 Recorded 1929 - 1930 CD206b

Smith Ballew's real name was Sykes Ballew. Born in 1902 in Palestine, Texas, he went to college at Austin College and the University of Texas. In his twenties, he was singing on the radio and had started his recording career - the earlist I have of him is the Meyer Davis Orchestra from 1928. He was quite prolific and had a recording career on Brunswick, Columbia, Velvet Tone and Harmony (Columbia's budget labels) Victor, and the ARC family of labels in the early thirties. 'Sweetheart We Need Each Other' was issued on at least 13 labels - many were proprietory labels for department stores. An unsual Victor labelled 'Smith Ballew And His Orchestra' was the only tile issued by Victor under his name. A second title recorded at the same session was 'Have A Little Faith In Me' but was unissued. Some of the records of his own band were labeled 'Jack Blue and His Texans' and 'Buddy Blue' These tracks were transferred with a special digital hi-definition process for smoother, clearer sound. ~ Mickey Clark
