The Revelers, a quintet (including piano) popular from the late teens to early 1930s, first recorded as The Shannon Quartet on Victor in 1917. Comprised of Charles Hart(tenor), Harvey Hindermeyer(tenor),Elliot Shaw(bar) and Wilfred Glenn(bass). They recorded for Brunswick(as The Merrymakers and Shannon Quartet) by 1920 and Columbia (As Shannon Four, Shannon Quartet and Singing Sophomores) after 1925. Their recordings became popular in the United States and then Europe in the late 1920s. The Electrola was issued in Germany, and the HMV was a New Zealand pressing. In 1929, they appeared with Richard Tauber at the Kursaal, Scheveningen and the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Holland. Individually, they had active recording careers on most major labels. By 1925, they became best known as the Revelers, but only on the Victor label, continuing to record as Shannon Four, Shannon Quartet and the Singing Sophomores on Columbia. Franklyn Baur, Lewis James, Elliot Shaw, Wilfred Glenn, and pianist Ed Smalle became the personnel until 1926, when Smalle was replaced by Frank Black. Baur was replaced by Charles Harrison (1927), Frank Luther and then James Melton. A short movie musical featured them in 1927, with 'Mine', 'Dinah' and 'No Foolin', and a second short with another three songs, awaits restoration by the Vitaphone Project. Stars on radio and in vaudeville, as well as in the recording studio. They were regulars on The Palmolive Hour (1927รป31). Ring Lardner observed, "Under any name, they sound as sweet." Lardner outlined his "perfect radio program" for The New Yorker magazine, and chose The Revelers, Paul Whiteman and Fanny Brice. The Comedian Harmonists formed in Germany 1927 after hearing The Revelers and appeared on the same bill at the Scala in Berlin in August 1929 and they became good friends. The Revelers were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. A special digital hi-definition process was used for fuller, clearer, smoother sound. ~ Mickey Clark
