Victor Salon Orchestra #2 All Recorded 1926 CD039B
The Victor Salon Orchestra was a bit ahead of the game when they first started recording in 1924. 1925 marked the introduction of a well engineered gramophone called the Victrola Credenza. Aside from large horned theatre models, until this time, home type horned
gramophones were incapable of reproducing the low frequencies embossed in electrically recorded grooves. With Nat Shilkret's vast experience with symphonic orchestras, where the audience was live in a theatre, whereas any studio orchestra was limited by the recording
process.
Born in 1889, by 1910, for about five years, he was engaged as a clarinetist in the best New York music orchestras, such as New York Philharmonic (under Safonov and Mahler,) the New York Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera House Orchestra, the Russian Symphony
Orchestra, Victor Herbert's Orchestra, Arnold Volpe's Orchestra, Sousa's Grand Concert Band, Arthur Pryor's Band, and Edwin Franko Goldman's Band, and was also a rehearsal pianist for Walter Damrosch, playing for stars who included dancer Isadora Duncan.
The orchestrations written by Nat Shilkret have such a broad texture of very low bass, and delicate subtlety by the violins and flutes. In the earlier arrangements, percussion didn't figure into the mix very much, but some of the later recordings are quite rhythmic. I
believe that the personnel with the VSO, to be drawn from the Victor Orchestra members. They were very capable musicians with broad careers spanning decades. Violinist Lou Raderman played with Victor Arden and Phil Ohman's orchestra, as did trumpeter Del
Steigers. The following are musicians that played with the Victor Orchestra, under Nat Shilkret. General Personnel: Del Staigers-Harry Shilkret-Hymie Farberman-Earl Oliver-Mike Mosiello-Tommy Dorsey-t/ Chuck Campbell-Sammy Lewis-tb Larry Abbott-Mike

As many of these players were experienced with a variety of instruments, a great sonic variety was possible with this group. As for Nat Shilkret, he played woodwind, keyboard and stringed instruments, he could play many of the instruments in the band, as could Andy
Sanella. Sanella cashed in on this ability as director of the Grey Gull Studio Band.
