Military Bands #1 CD122AN

The Stars and Stripes Forever was written by John Philip Sousa in 1896 and first performed in 1897. Sousa wrote in his autobiography, Marching Along, that he composed the march on Christmas Day, 1896, en route home to the U.S. on an ocean liner. Returning from a vacation in Europe with his wife, he had just learned of the recent death of David Blakely, manager of Sousa's Band. He composed the march in his head and committed the notes to paper on arrival in the United States. It was first performed at Willow Grove Park, just outside Philadelphia, on May 14, 1897, and was immediately greeted with enthusiasm. "The Maple Leaf Forever" is a song written by Canadian Alexander Muir (1830–1906) in 1867, the year of Canada's Confederation. After serving with the Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto in the Battle of Ridgeway against the Fenians in 1866, he returned to Toronto Ontario where he wrote the song while sitting under a maple tree in his yard. Both these recordings of the Canadian and U.S. anthems could certainly have been played by the men fighting during the First World War.You'll find a scan of the label for the Edinburgh Festival in volume two of this set. 'O Canada' was written by Calixa Lavallée , (Verchères, Québec, December 28, 1842 – Boston, Massachusetts, January 21, 1891) and Robert Stanley Weir FRSC (November 15, 1856 – August 20, 1926) who was a judge in Montreal Quebec, and poet most famous for writing the English lyrics to "O Canada", the national anthem of Canada. He was educated as a teacher and lawyer and considered one of the leading experts of the day on Quebec's municipal civil law. He was appointed a municipal court judge and a judge for the Exchequer Court of Canada. Calixa Lavallée was born near Verchères, a village near Montreal, Quebec. His father, Augustin Lavallée, accomplished in many trades, including blacksmith, logger, bandmaster, self-taught luthier, bandleader and worked for the pipe organ builder Joseph Casavant. ~ Mickey Clark
