Prince's Band #1 Recorded 1900 - 1910 346amp3

This anthology is loosely called 'The World of Charles Adams Prince'. As I started to read about this amazing man, the project grew into a who's who of Columbia record's output from 1900 - my earliest disc during his tenure at Columbia covering everything from blues to symphony recordings. Prince was the musical director for Columbia records during this period and it became apparent that he established many milestones during his career. His first recordings were military marches and shorter excerpts from classical repertiore. A major milestone was his 1910 recording of Schubert's 'Unfinished Symphony' - included as the final cut on this disc. The Columbia studio before 1913 was limited to about 16 musicians, and the acoustical technology of the day was hard pressed to record so many instruments. A particular issue was the use of percussion when a master could easily made unusable if the groove spiral overlapped, making playback impossible without jumping. Charles Adams Prince was born in 1869 and was recording for Columbia playing piano by 1891, and conducted the studio band by 1904, assuming the role previously held by cornetist Tom Clark. All these tracks were transferred with a special digital hi-definition process for clearer, smoother, fuller sound.
