Victor Salon Orchestra #3 Recorded 1926 - 1929 CD039C

The tracks on the previous discs have been all instrumental, but vocals made an appearance with the song "My Blue Heaven." Elliott Shaw of the Revelers fame takes the lead with Mayre Berne, Katherine O'Neale and Helena Lanvin. It seems that this was the only recording by these vocalists, but they seem to have done a lot of singing as a group. I went on a quest to find out more about them. Thanks to a member of the ARSC group, I was advised of a repository of newspaper articles from the twenties holding a wealth of information regarding Mayre Berne and mezzo soprano Helena Lanvin. I believe Mayre (or Marye) to be born Marye Bernhofer in 1891 in Brandenburg Germany. A year later, her family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A move to Skagway, Alaska followed to join her aunts where they ran the New Home Restaurant and Boarding House. Marye was sent to the Munich Conservatory in Germany in 1908 to study voice, and remained there, active in performing until 1915, when she returned to the USA. An extensive concert tour of the West Coast followed, from Alaska to California, with rave reviews of her operatic performances. She married musician Ernest A. Ehler in 1930 and performed with him and a small ensemble in Alaska. A move to Seattle, Washington followed by the mid fifties. In 1925,a series of opera performances took place at Ebbets Field in New York, with a cast of 400 people, in an open air presentation of Cavallaria Rusticana where Helena Lanvin played Lola and a second opera, Faust, where she played a male role as Siebel. She also played the part of the High Priestess in Aida It's interesting that her name is a combination of two fashion icons, Helena Rubenstein clothing and Jeanne Lanvin of cosmetics fame. For Brooklyn born Helena Lanvin, these performances served as her operatic debut, following her involvement in "club musicales" and singing in church. Katherine O'Neale was in the chorus for the Circus Princess which opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York on April 25, 1927. I have included tracks by the Victor Salon Group, and the Victor Concert Orchestra, on this disc which stylistically are similar to the Salon Orchestra in the era covered in this disc.
