This Diamond Disc Classics series is dedicated to my mom - Betty Clark 1929 - 2016 an arts supporter, volunteer and promoter in the Penticton B.C. area. Armenian baritone Torcom Bezazian heads this disc with the 1920 recording 'Stances de Nilikantha': "Lakmé, ton doux regard se voile" from the opera Lakme by Delibes. Bezazian recorded also for Victor The most famous arias from Lakme are the duet and the 'Bell Song' - Dove E' L'Indiana Bruna - immortalized by Amelita Galli-Curci in 1917. I have been fortunate to acquire so many Claudia Muzio DD's, all recorded 1920 - 1921. A beautiful expressive voice. Born in 1889, she started vocal training in Turin in 1905, debuting in opera in 1910 and progressing to La Scala in Milan in 1913 as Desdemona in Verdi's Otello. Having earned the nickname 'La Divina Claudia' by 1919 when singing at the Metropolitan Opera, she continued performing into the mid thirties. Anna Case was used in the Edison 'tone tests' singing live and comparing the sound to her records. Born in 1888,in Clinton, New Jersey, she sang in the American premiere of Boris Godunov in 1913 at the Met, and in 1919 acted for the silent film 'The Hidden Truth'. In 1928, she recorded one of Edison's long play records - a medium very rare and difficult to play without skipping. By 1928, Edisons were all electrically recorded. She appeared in documentaries about sound recording and recorded once more in 1930, 'Just A'wearin' For You' J.Harold Murray was performed in vaudeville, operetta and musical theatre. J.Lester Haberkorn sang with a minstrel group touring all over the USA The final two tracks are electrically recorded.
