Out On A Limb #1 160AN<.p>

Alec Wilder penned the title song from this compilation, stating the theme in general of this selection of songs. Covering a span of the mid twenties to the late 30's, these sophisticated love songs cover many facets of romance - sometimes challenging, funny, or jazzy, but never too slow. Chick Bullock, born(September 16, 1898 was most active in the 1930s, having recorded over 500 tunes during his career. Mostly associated with the ARC group of labels (Melotone, Perfect, Banner, Oriole, Romeo, and credited "Chick Bullock and his Levee Loungers". Other freelance vocalists recording for the ARC family including Smith Ballew, Harold "Scrappy" Lambert, Elmer Feldkamp, Helen Rowland, Paul Small, Dick Robertson, Helen Ward and many more. The ARC label had an all-star studio lineup including Sylvester Ahola-Bunny Berigan-Sterling Bose-Frank Guarente-Bob Ef fros-t/ Tommy Dorsey-Charlie Butterfield-Jack Teagarden-tb/ Jimmy Dorsey-Chester Hazlett-Freddy Martin-Sid Stoneburn-Arnold Brilhart-cl-as-bar etc./ Larry Binyon-Mutt Hayes-cl-ts-f etc./ Joe Venuti-Harry Hoffman-Walter Edelstein-Lou Kosloff-vn/ Joe Meresco-Arthur Schutt-p/ Eddie Lang-Carl Kress-Dick McDonough-Perry Botkin-Tommy Felline-bj-g/ Joe Tarto-bb-sb/ Hank Stern-bb/ Artie Bernstein-Dick Cherwin-sb/ Stan King-Larry Gomar-d-vib-etc./ and many more. Arrangements tend to be less commercial and stand the test of time in theisr originality. Rarely performing live because of a facial disfigurement, due to an eye affliction, Bullock was born in Montana to William and Emily Bullock, both of whom were immigrants from England. He began his career in vaudeville and sang in movie palaces. His career as a studio vocalist took off in the late 20s, and in the 1930s he sang with musicians such as Duke Ellington, Luis Russell, Cab Calloway, Bunny Berigan, Bill Coleman, Jack Teagarden, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Joe Venuti, and Eddie Lang. Proving so popular that he used pseudonyms for some recordings, including the name Sleepy Hall - which could be confusing because there was an actual person with that name. In the 1940s the World War II recording ban essentially ended Bullock's career. He moved to California and took up real estate.
