Franklyn Baur was born in New York in 1903 and educated at Amherst. At 19, he was selected from over 50 candidates as principal tenor in the John D. Rockefeller Church. His mom's dad held the same position for many years in Henry Ward Beecher's Brooklyn church. His entire span of recording covers only five years. A testament to his talent is the presence of so many great names in the recording industry during 1924 - 1929 - the span covered by this series. In this volume alone, he sings with 11 different groups for 3 record labels - Victor Brunswick, and Columbia. Bands He recorded under many pseudonyms including Irving Post (Puritan), George Bronson (Regal and Banner), Sydney or Sidney Mitchell (Oriole and Banner), Joseph Elliott (National Music Lovers), and Ben Litchfield and Charles Dale (Radiex, Grey Gull, and related labels--he was sometimes Charles Dale a name used for various singers. He would have been about 21 years old when he waxed When The One You Love Loves You with Paul Whiteman. Nat Shilkret directed the International Novelty Orchestra. The previous session to this had a vocal by an augmented Revellers - including Baur-Lewis James-tenors/Elliott Shaw-Ed Smalle-bar/Wilfred Glenn-bass. Starting with some slower waltzes and ballads, by the time we get to Sam Lanin's "Why Do You Want To Know Why?" the band is playing jazz - Franklyn could run the whole gamut of styles.
