Long Live Love Disc #2
The second disc in this series starts with a young Ella Fitzgerald. Born in 1917, she had a troubled youth and her mother passed in 1932, resulting in her moving in with her aunt, then by 1934 she was on the street, attempting to support herself. Dancing was an early aspiration, but after winning a vocal competition at the Apollo Theatre in 1934, she soon connected with drummer Chick Webb, waxing her first record in 1935 - Love And Kisses . By 1938 , Webb was developing health problems and he passed in 1939, at which time Ella took over the band, renaming it to 'Ella Fitzgerald and her Famous Orchestra' until 1942 when it was disbanded. Born in 1911, Maxine Sullivan was active in theatre , movies and television. Yvette a.k.a. Elsa Harris Silver recorded a small number of Bluebird 78s but it seems that she was active doing radio broadcasts and touring during the war in Europe, as 'Yvette and her GI Gang'. Coleman Hawkins' version of Body And Soul became the model for sax players that followed. I have always felt that Hawkins was a musical poet - the words are in his playing. Manhattan Transfer did a vocal version of Body and Soul - with words inspired by Hawkins solo. Matty Malneck was a member of Paul Whiteman's Orchestra back in the twenties. He recorded inder his own name for Decca records . Artie Shaw made a number orf recordings with his small combo-the 'Gramercy Five", featuring harpsichord playes by Johnny Guarnieri. Tito Guizar was featured in 'The Big Broadcast of 1938' with Bob Hope. All these records are from my personal collection ~ Mickey Clark
