Ray Noble #2 All recorded 1931 CD352b

Our Price: $16.99

As the HMV studio orchestra from August of 1929, Ray Noble backed up many vocals by artists such as Paul Robeson, Gracie Fields, George Metaxa and many more. I have chosen representative samples of his work with some of these performers. This disc features two puzzle records - Al Bowlly sings on the 1:07 minute track - 'Goodnight Sweetheart' and 'I'll Be Good Because Of You' Another version of 'Goodnight Sweetheart' is sung by George Metaxa. Al Bowlly was born in Mozambique in 1898 and brought up in Johannesburg, South Africa - his first jobs were as a barber and jockey - at 19 he was singing on tour with Edgar Adeler's band in South Africa, and Indonesia. After parting with Adeler, he did his first recordings in India with Jimmy Lequime - he didn't sing but played the banjo in that session. He found his way to Berlin by 1927,and stayed for about a year and did some of his first recordings after re-connecting with Edgar Adeler. Making his way to England, he joined Fred Elizalde, and also sang and played with Van Phillips, Percival Mackey, Len Fillis, Edgar Adeler, Jay Wilbur, Harry Hudson, Alfredo, Marius B. Winter. Jack Plant (aka Carol Porter), was born in Partington, near Manchester in 1896. A clerk with Co-operative Wholesale Society salt works in Irlam, his first singing was as a member of the Congregational Church Choir in Partington. Serving in the army from 1914 - 1918 in France, he entertained fellow servicemen with his singing. After the war he re-assumed his clerical role at the Co-operative Wholesale Society and joined the Manchester Bloom Street Choir. Webster Miller, a leading tenor at the Beecham Opera House, gave him singing lessons. However, Jack's voice wasn't strong enough for grand opera so he engaged with chorus work, touring with musical comedy companies up to 1928. Maurice Elwin, a baritone singing with the Savoy Orpheans introduced Jack to dance band singing, and by 1929,was also singing with the Savoy Orpheans, and later with Jack Hylton's Orchestra. As Carol Porter, he made a number of recordings for the 7" Eclipse label, and can also be found on Regal-Zonophone.
