Theodore Leopold Friedman was born in Circleville, Ohio on June 6, 1890. His first recordings were with Earl Fuller's Jass Band, on the Victor label - inspired by the Original Dixieland Jass Band, which also recorded for Victor. Ted's first waxing of his at times zany clarinet can be heard on CD034 - Acoustic Jazz, with Fuller's ensemble from 1917. I am amazed at Ted's evolution over the course of these discs, from crude, corny, percussive acoustical performances to hot, dynamic jazz in the late twenties througn to early thirties.
