Rudolph Friml #2 Recorded 1917 - 1938 CD060b

Rudolf Friml was one of the best known composers for operetta - this disc features music from 'Katinka', 'The Firefly' and 'The Vagabond King". Allah's Holiday was one of the most popular tunes from Katinka. The Victor Salon Group was comprised of Della Baker-Emily Stokes Hagar-Gladys Rice-Ruth Rodgers-Helen Clark-Lucy Isabelle Marsh-sop/Elsie Baker-Rose Bryant-contralto/ Charles Harrison-Lewis James-James Melton-Lambert Murphy-ten/Elliott Shaw-Stanley Baughman-baritone/Frank Croxton-Wilfred Glenn-bass. Tracks 1, 4, and 8 are from the Friml red seal Victor set recorded in 1930 by the Victor Salon Group. No Friml comilation would be complete without the two songs from the Firefly - 'The Donkey Serenade' and 'Giannina Mia' sung by Allan Jones. Ben Frankel's swinging dance version, recorded in 1938, is an amazing adaptation of this music. Carolyn Thompson and Dennis King were part of the original cast of the Vagabond King. 'If I Were King' was written by Leo Robin, Newell Chase and Sam Coslow for the movie version of the show. It seems that the duet with Dennis King and Josepha Chenova was never issued in the U.S. but only on HMV from the UK. ~Mickey Clark
