The first 12 tracks on this album were recorded acoustically. For some reason, the second side of the Mikado (as numbered) was the first in the show, so I have put in that order - it makes sense to introduce the 'Gentlemen Of Japan' first. In 'Jack o' Lantern, the baritone solos are taken by Reinald Werrenrath. Canadian tenor Harry Macdonough (real name John Scantlebury Macdonald) takes the first solo in 'Going Up' . Macdonough would go on to be Victor's national sales manger by 1920. Rose Marie is the first electrical recorging by the VLOC, dating from April of 1925. In the medley from Student Prince, Richard Crooks takes the lead, whereas in the single, 24 year old Donald Novis alternates the solo, holding his own with 30 year old tenor Richard Crooks. Novis was best known for popular vocals with George Olsen, Gus Arnheim and Jimmie Grier's Orchestra but was featured with the Biltmore trio in 1929 in the movie 'Love In The Rough'and sang a solo of 'One More Waltz'. All tese tracks were transferred with a special digital hi-definition process for smoother, clearer sound. ~ Mickey Clark
