Leo Reisman #4 Recorded 1930 - 1931 CD082D
The 33 1/3 format is best known for the introduction of the microgroove LP in 1948, but RCA was experimenting with the format by 1931. 331/3 had been used
for radio transcriptions and movie sound tracks as early as 1923. The fifteen inch movie audio discs were known as 'synchro-discs' as the projectionist would start the
disc using an arrow pressed into the wax to align the stylus and the film would have a corresponding mark. The turntable was geared to the projector to guarantee that
the sound would remain synchronized with the video portion of the movie. Imagine the panic if the record jumped or locked at any point. If it was a two reeler, the disc
for the first reel would play from the inside (near the label) and the second would play from the outside of the disc, to normalize the volume level of the first disc
to the next. All these formats would use a 78 size groove, which limited their high frequencies. The same holds true for the 'Victor Program Transcriptions' on which
the Bandwagon was issued. Leo Reisman would record a few. 'Melody''As Thousands Cheer,' 'Gold Diggers of 1933' in 1933,Dance Selections-Stormy Weather and 'Happy As The
Day Is Long' and the 'Cat And The Fiddle' in 1931, found on volume five. Some are merely dubs of earlier 78 rpm records, and the sound is inferior to the 78 issues.
Frances Maddux was born in 1908 in Hollywood and learned to play piano. While in her teens, she apeared as a soloist with the Los Angeles Symphonic Orchestra. A move to
New york followed, and she was active in cabarets, night clubs, theatres and radio. She appeared in London's Cafe De Paris, Deauville, and Biarritz. Her recording
of 'Body And Soul' was take 17 - almost unheard of at the time. Most issued takes range from one to three. Frank Luther's version (Take 3) can be heard on disc 3. Both
have Bubber Miley but have a slightly different intro. In general, until 1945, all recording was done 'direct to disc.' As such, there was no re-usable tape, and
alternate takes are not common, but occasionally show up. Lee Wiley recorded the two tracks found on this disc, and another, 'South In My Soul' which she co-wrote with
Victor Young. Born in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, in 1908, by 1923 she headed to New York and sang on New York City radio stations. A fall while horseback riding
resulted in temporary blindness but she recovered. By 1934, she was recording with Paul Whiteman. I have included an air check of 'If I Love Again' on Paul Whiteman
#14. Lee would marry pianist Jess Stacey in 1943 and had a tumultious five year relationship. They made a lovely record of 'It's Only A Paper Moon' together in 1945
and like Frances Maddux, recorded for the Liberty Music Shop label. ~ Mickey Clark
