Leo Reisman #3 Recorded 1929 - 1930 CD082C

Up to late 1929, Leo Reisman's vocalists included his own vocals, and those of Don Howard, Ran Weeks, Lewis James Lewis James and Larry Levin. By late 1929, Frank Luther would dominate the vocals, Daniel L. Haynes, Philip Steele and Lew Conrad would also sing. Although Luther is frequently heard singing with dance bands, he was best known as a cowboy singer, and co-composer with Carson Robison, of 'Barnacle Bill The Sailor,''Cross-Eyed Sue' and other songs in the western genre. Daniel L.Haynes was a lead actor in the M-G-M movie "Hallelujah" and he recorded only one song with Leo Reisman in May of 1930 - 'Rollin' Down The River.' Directed by King Vidor, it was one of the first films with an all black cast. His film debut was 'John Smith' in 1922, and he was also in 'The Last Mile' from 1932, 'Mary Burns, Fugitive' and 'So Red the Rose,' 'Escape from Devil's Island' all from 1935, and 'Fury,' filmed in 1936. Philip Steele recorded an unissued take of 'Say "Oui" Cherie' as well as 'Around The Corner.' Most of the recordings of this song had a male vocal, giving comedic feel to the line' He kissed me once, he kissed me twice,it wasn't just the thing to do but gosh it was so nice'! Lew Conrad was born into a musical family. His father was a vocal soloist at the cathedral in Tours, France and his mother was in a church choir in Leeds, England. His father had passed while he was still young, and he and his mother moved to Massachusetts, USA, where he enrolled in Tuft's University in Medford,, continuing with the violin as his instrument which he had played since a child. He had even played in vaudeville as a child prodigy but resented the travel required, and his vaudeville career lasted two weeks. While at Tuft's, "I went to classes most of the day, had rehearsals and played in dance orchestras in the evening and it usually was past midnight when I started to study for the next day's classes. So I formed the habit of sleeping but four or five hours each night. I still do" Conrad told a newspaper reporter in 1931 (The Lincoln Star, May 10, 1931 p 39) After graduation, his first gig was with the Cleveland Symphony which lasted a year, when he started with Leo Reisman, playing the violin and singing. Around 1930, he also sang with both Nat Shilkret and Ben Selvin, and signed with NBC where he would be heard nation wide. His own band recorded four sides for Victor in 1932. Reisman's 1930 lineup was Leo Reisman-vn-dir/ Bubber Miley-Louis Shaffrin-and another-t/ Ernie Gibbs-tb/ Jess Smith-cl-as-f/ Louis Martin-as/ Burt Williams-as-bar/ Bill Tronstein-cl-ss-as-ts/ Adrian Rollini-bsx/ Lew Conrad-vn-v/ vc / Eddie Duchin-p/ ?-bj/ Harry Atlas-bb/ Harry Sigman-d ~ Mickey Clark
