Feodor Ivanovich Chaliapin pronounced with three syllables (Shal-Ya-pin) was born February 13 1873 in Kazan, Russia. Taught by was Dmitri Usatov, Chaliapin began his career at Tbilisi and the Imperial Opera, St. Petersburg in 1894. His first role there was as Mephistopheles in Gounod's Faust at the Mamontov Private Opera from 1896 to 1899 to considerable acclaim. Soon enjoying an international career at major opera houses, he is often credited with establishing the tradition of naturalistic acting in his performances. In 1901, he began a tour of the West, and made a sensational debut at La Scala, playing the devil in Mefistofele by Boito. Early on, three other great basses reined -the powerful Lev Sibiriakov (1869–1942), the more lyrical Vladimir Kastorsky (1871–1948), and Dmitri Buchtoyarov (1866–1918), but he remains the best known of them all. Meeting Sergei Rachmaninoff, the assistant conductor at Mamontov he was introduced to the opera Boris Godunov by Mussorgsky, which became his signature role. Learning about musicianship, including how to analyze a music score, and find the pinnacle of a piece of music - how to slowly sculpt the intensity to bring out the dynamics in it. Chaliapin recorded the 'Song of the Volga Boatmen' in 1922, 1926 1927 and 1936. I have included all except the 1926 recording acoustically and electrically recorded , with a variety of accompaniement from piano to orchestra and chorus. The 'Song Of The Flea' versions included are 1921, 1926 and 1936. He also recorded this in 1907 and 1927. Following his success at Mamontov, he appeared regularly from 1899 until 1914 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. During the First World War, Chaliapin also appeared regularly at the Zimin Private Opera in Moscow. ~Mickey Clark
