Glantz + Friends #18 Gene Rodemich CD358R

Born in 1890 in St.Louis, Missouri, Eugene Frederick Rodemich was the son of a dentist, Dr. Henry Rodemich. In 1909, he was playing piano on Governor Hadley's ship travelling on the Mississippi from St.Louis to New Orleans with President Taft on board. Gene was accompanist for entertainer Elsie Janis, who is best known for co-writing the song "Love Your Magic Spell Is Everywhere" with Edmund Goulding, a film director. The song was introduced by Gloria Swanson of "Sunset Boulevard" fame, in the movie "The Trespasser" in 1929. With the support of his family, Gene ventured into the band management business, the Rodemich Orchestra Exchange; assembling musicians to play at various gigs in the St. Louis area. After Gus Haenchen (Carl Fenton's real name) experienced a diving accident, losing a number of teeth, Gene's father created a bridge to repair Gus's dental issues. Through this mishap, Gene met Gus who took over the band business in 1913, and went on to being the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company's musical director. As Gene only played by ear, Gus transcribed many charts for Gene's band to play. Inability ro read music aside, Gene was a prolific composer of such songs as Shanghai Shuffle, Tia Juana, and was musical director of the Van Beuren movie studio from 1929 to 1934. He would write music and conduct the orchestra for early cartoons which were distributed by RKO Radio pictures. One of theese, "In the Bag" is on Youtube.
